Chocolate syrup comes in plastic squeeze bottles, so when I wanted some today I realized that I’d have to make it myself. It was actually pretty easy to do and it tastes good. In addition to being plastic-free, this homemade chocolate syrup is cheap to make. Here are the ingredients I used:
- 1/4 cup cocoa (I bought it in bulk and I’m storing it in an old cookie tin)
- 1/2 cup water
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar (I bought it in bulk)
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract (I got it in a glass bottle with a metal lid)
Combine cocoa and water in a saucepan. Whisk over medium heat until cocoa is dissolved.
Add sugar. Whisk until dissolved. Bring to a boil. Boil for three minutes, whisking constantly and remove from heat.
Add vanilla extract.
Pour into a glass bottle and refrigerate. I poured my chocolate syrup into an old iced tea bottle.
Enjoy! I made some chocolate milk with my chocolate syrup as soon as I was finished making it.

Mmmmm, this too is on my list. I swear I eat more than just chocolate goods 😉
I just made this today, and used it to sweeten my iced coffee - YUM! Sooo delish, and better than plasticy hersheys. Turned out more like a mocha that using hersheys too, LOVE it. I double the recipe because I drink iced coffee twice a day 😉
