Midterms are done and I’m back to posting! Here’s the ingredient of the week.
Sucanat (which is a brand name for a type of whole cane sugar) is a type of minimally processed natural sweetener. Sucanat doesn’t have the molasses removed from it, so it has more flavor than refined white sugar. I like to use sucanat in my baking instead of refined white sugar because refined white sugar is bleached. White flour is usually bleached too (but unbleached white flour is easy to find). I also like to use sucanat in baking since it has a nice flavor. I substitute sucanat for refined white sugar in muffins. I also use it to make this lemonade. Sucanat usually comes in plastic bags, but this can be avoided. I buy sucanat in bulk at Whole Foods.
I usually get a glass jar tared at customer service and then fill it up with sucanat.
I only have one recipe on here that has sucanat as an ingredient (my zucchini muffins) because I just started using it recently. But you can use sucanat in my other muffin recipes too like pumpkin walnut date muffins or maple pumpkin muffins. I’ve also used sucanat in chocolate sugar cookies. If you haven’t tried sucanat before and you like the flavor of molasses, I highly recommend it.
