The production of plastic waste during breakfast may seem inevitable, but think again. Here are my favorite plastic-free breakfasts:
- Oatmeal made from oats bought in bulk. Rolled oats are quicker to cook, but steel cut oats are more nutritious and have a chewier texture when cooked. Add things like chopped apples, raisins, maple syrup, cinnamon and honey to add variety.
- Cereal purchased in bulk with a cloth bag.
- Homemade granola with almond milk or milk from a glass bottle. Some stores also sell granola in bulk if you’re too busy to make it yourself.
- Homemade waffles and pancakes made with homemade buttermilk. Coconut flour pancakes are good too. Ditch frozen pancakes and waffles. When I make waffles, I freeze any leftovers. When I want waffles for breakfast but I don’t have time to make them, I pop the homemade frozen ones in my toaster.
- Almond rice porridge, one of my favorites.
- Toast, scrambled eggs and sausages. Bring your own container to the meat counter to buy the sausages. For toast, try my oat and raisin bread or my beer bread.
- Fresh seasonal fruit with homemade yogurt.
- Make your own smoothies instead of buying them in those little plastic bottles. The store-bought ones, aside from being in plastic bottles, are filled with additives and lots of sugar. Instead of buying frozen fruit for smoothies in plastic bags, I cut up fresh fruits and freeze them in glass jars. Another beverage I like to drink in the morning is orange juice with buttermilk.
- Homemade muffins. Try my pumpkin walnut date muffins, maple pumpkin muffins or zucchini muffins.
